Many of the most horrifying experiences of my youth revolved around being forced to try new foods that I had no interest in what-so-ever. Many of these foods were of the green vegetable and whole-grain bread variety, stereotypical health foods that few children want to tussle with. As I got older, however, I transitioned from an obnoxiously finicky eater to an obnoxiously adventurous eater. I garnered a love of food and cooking, so much so that I decided to enroll in culinary school. My tendency to seek out unique restaurants is what ultimately inspired this blog.
So what do “unconventional eats” entail? Well, no universal consensus exists on what foods qualify as “unconventional,” as everyone has their own perception of everyday consumables based on heritage, religion, geography and really just culture in general. The items that I have decided to include are intended to be considered unconventional to a majority of New Englanders. Examples include dishes from lesser-known cuisines (Nepali or Venezuelan, for example), dishes made from organ meats (AKA offal) and wacky and original creations that can only be found at individual restaurants.
My search for the most unusual dishes will center around New England, and more specifically, New Hampshire. The food scene in this small but mighty state is constantly evolving, and I am excited to highlight the creativity being pumped out of restaurant kitchens across the state and region.
